Meet Corey, the driving force behind CARBONSTONE, as he shares insights into their fusion of industrial alternative metal, raw energy, and plans for the future.
1. Can you tell us about how CARBONSTONE came together as a band and what inspired your unique blend of industrial alternative metal?
Corey: I grew up a mega fan of The Offspring, Korn and Orgy so the inspiration for doing heavy industrial stuff has always been there. I’ve always wanted to kind of blur the line with rock genres as a whole.
2. Your sound is often described as a fusion of genres like nu-metal and electronica. How do you balance these diverse influences while maintaining a cohesive sound?
Corey: By incorporating the elements of electronica we are able to increase the diversity of our sound in a way that expands upon the existing rock genres. It’s all about experimenting in the studio! Haha!
3. What themes or concepts do you explore in your music, and how do they resonate with your audience?
Corey: definitely dark concepts. I don’t write anything happy lyrically. (obviously). I feel that the ultimate human connection is achieved through the feeling of our weakest moments (hopelessness, sadness, anger) and then being able to rise up and overcome it. The lyrics are written from my personal experiences and are to help our listeners recognize that they aren’t alone in fighting their internal wars. We are ALL fighting them and none of us are ever alone! ✊🏻🙏🏻
4. With influences ranging from Korn to NIN, what aspects of these iconic bands do you draw upon, and how do you incorporate them into your own music?
Corey: The raw sonic aggression. I’ll never forget all those years way back when I was kid watching Korn on stage. I was absolutely blown away by how much energy they had. That’s something I’ve always tried to incorporate into our live shows. A constant flow of chaotic, physical energy. There are moments on stage where I’ll get completely lost in my head saying “Keep moving, more energy, MORE!!” It’s tough to find the balance sometime. As a vocalist, you need to find the perfect amount of stage energy so you don’t completely run yourself out of breath! Haha!
5. Baltimore, MD, has a rich musical history. How has your hometown influenced your sound and creative process?
Corey: Just by being around so many different talented artists. You kind of pick little things up from everything and everyone around you as you go along.
6. Your latest album has been receiving great reviews. Could you walk us through the creative process behind it and any challenges you faced during its production?
Corey: So for the writing process I’ll initially come up with a riff that connects with me. Once that happens I’ll start writing vocal Melodie’s with some scratch lyrics. Those usually end up all staying haha. After a song is fully structured I’ll take it to the studio where Tony Correlli and I sort of deconstruct/reconstruct certain parts and implement all of the crazy electronic synth elements. It’s always a blast taking a song in as a skeleton and really seeing it fleshed out after the magic treatment! The challenge was how fast we were aiming to turn it around. We practically lived in the studio the entire summer of 2021 and while it was amazing getting the album done, we literally missed out on all summer festivities as a whole.
7. Many of your songs feature both hard-hitting guitars and electronic synth elements. How do you approach the integration of these elements to create a cohesive sonic experience?
Corey: So Tony and I will look at what we’ve done in past songs and that usually helps us decide where to integrate the synths into the new ones. There’s a small bit of planning behind it but we mainly just go off of what sounds the best and what will be best for the song.
8. Your live performances are known for their energy and intensity. How do you translate the studio recordings into a dynamic live show, and what can fans expect from a CARBONSTONE concert?
Corey: In all honesty, I try to channel and fully embrace each song with the memories of what I wrote them about while we’re up on stage. Some memories aren’t the happiest and it really helps to get the best aggressive, intense energy out of me. We always make sure to give 110% at every single show so that the fans can fully connect with us and the music. Full circle energy is from ourselves, to the fans and back!!
9. In an era of streaming and digital music, how do you think the role of albums has evolved, and what do you hope listeners take away from your latest release?
Corey: It’s tough to say on that. A lot of music consumers are geared more towards the single format these days. I myself absolutely love creating an entire body of work such as an ep or album and it’s killer to see that a large portion of our fans feel the same. Our latest release “White Noise” is kind of setting the bar for the upcoming EP so if you’re a new listener and you dig the heavy melodic stuff, you’ll definitely want to keep your eyes on us!
10. Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for CARBONSTONE, both musically and as a band, and what can fans expect from you in the future?
Corey: I’m extremely excited about the bands future! As you know, we just signed with EMG and are ecstatic about it! I feel really confident with the entire team that we have assembled here and believe that some big waves are coming! These guys are all like brothers to me. As of right now, we’re currently working on a brand new Ep (still untitled) so fans can keep their eyes out for more news on that in the coming weeks. The songs are coming along nicely!!
