Interview Enmity

We had the opportunity to sit down with Enmity, a band that combines the talents of musicians from different countries to create "Old School" Thrash Death Metal. They discuss their origins, their diverse backgrounds, their latest album "Demagoguery," collaborations with renowned musicians, and their aspirations for the future. Read on to discover the unique perspective and powerful music of Enmity.

How did the band Enmity come together, and what motivated each of you to pursue "Old School" Thrash Death Metal?

Thank you so much.. It all started with David (guitar) and Steeve (vocals) them being long time friends and both are involved in the metal scene in their own ways. David was a live sound engineer for bands in the late 90’s till early 2000 (Nile, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy to name a few), and Steeve fronting a couple of bands (No Return, Zuul FX) but never been together, so after Steeve pushing for working together, David picked up the guitar and started composing music and some solid material were brewing. David found me (Mo-Bass) on youtube and contacted me, we had a couple of chats we all clicked and this project was rolling, along the way we found Michael (guitar) he is from Indonesia and he is amazing and blended in with us, after we got enough songs for our first release we contacted George Kollias who is a good friend of David (he was their live sound man for many years) and he was the icing on the cake on performing drums on this record and making it sound massive.

Enmity consists of musicians from different countries. How does this diverse background influence the band's music and creative process?

Humans are humans everywhere and you get to feel this when you strip shit like flags and nationalities, Music is a world language and we all should strive to be one and not divided by shit. As for cultures they are like your vocabulary and this can add to the whole sound and massage of the music presented.

Could you tell us about your upcoming full-length album, "Demagoguery"? What themes or messages are explored in the lyrics?

Demagoguery is already out by now, it covers an Anti-war theme, our lyrics are written by Enmity and our extra member Erika from Hungary.

What was the recording process like for "Demagoguery"? Did you face any challenges along the way?

Recording happened at everyone place of residence being in Indonesia, France, Jordan and Greece. David and Mo were handling production and song arrangements. Our dear friend Jean-Fracois Dagenais from Kataklysm was responsible for Mixing and Mastering the album.

We see that you have guest musicians Karl Sanders from Nile and Max Otero from Mercyless featured on your project. How did these collaborations come about, and what did they bring to the album?

All the guests on this album are good friends due to David’s previous work as a live sound engineer touring with a lot of bands, we approached them and they all were happy as we were to be part of Enmity. Songs were sent when we had the final structure down, we only chatted about the songs theme and not musically as we wanted for them to have their freedom and personality, everyone did an amazing job and we are proud of all the collaborations.

As a band, what are some of your major musical influences, and how do they manifest in your music?

We are old school metal heads, so all the good bands are in our music someway somehow, from Bolt thrower, Death, Pestilence, Coroner, Carcass, Morbid Angel.

With experienced musicians in the band, how do you continue to push the boundaries of your sound while staying true to the "Old School" Thrash Death Metal genre?

We compose what we want to hear and feel good about, Enmity is a full package from the lyrics to the music, there is always a theme behind it all.

Are there any particular tracks on "Demagoguery" that stand out to you, either in terms of their musicality or their lyrical content? If so, why?

Everyone has his favorite from the album which is very good. Lyrically we are involved in them all so they all have a point to make.

How would you describe the live experience of an Enmity performance? What can fans expect from your shows?

We are arranging to go live hopefully beginning of 2024, anyone who wants some solid old school music will appreciate the music.

What are some of the highlights and challenges you have faced as a band since its formation?

Everyone is very professional and takes the band seriously so no issues in there, but the main difficulty can be the difference in time between all of us living in different countries, so having an online meeting can be crazy.

With members spread across different countries, how do you manage to collaborate and work on music effectively? Do you primarily rely on technology, or do you also have opportunities for in-person rehearsals?

For now it’s been through technology, we have our way that’s working for us now, the song idea’s starts from David then goes to Mohammed for arrangement and fine tuning. After we get through that we start sharing ith the rest of the band members.

What do you think sets Enmity apart from other bands in the "Old School" Thrash Death Metal scene?

Well, just check us out and hear the music. Read the lyrics. If that suits you then fine.

As individual musicians, what are some of your personal goals or aspirations within the band? Are there any specific milestones you hope to achieve?

Just to keep making music, it’s a great opportunity to be creative. And we are making more and more like minded friends throughout which is great.

Looking ahead, what can fans expect from Enmity in the near future? Any projects or collaborations on the horizon?

We are finalizing our EP which will be released by the end of the year and it will have some interesting collaborations as well. Also preparing for a tour next year.

Much thanks to everyone in the Metal scene, you are what keeps this rolling. Remember to explore music from all around the world, it is out there and you should do your own search and you’ll be amazed and I bet you’ll enjoy what can be found. Always support the underground.
