From forming in 2009 to releasing 'Noirnoise' in 2024, Noirnoise's journey blends dark, scathing sounds with a rich history. Discover their unique fusion and creative process.
1. Congratulations
on the release of your debut EP, "Noirnoise"! Can you tell us about
the journey from forming the band in 2009 to finally releasing this project in
2024?
Noirnoise
was born in 2009 but the most of us has been playing together since 1997. The
arrival of a new drummer, in 2009, entailed the need of a new name for the
band, something representative of the sound that we wanted to create, a sound
rude, scathing, dark and animalistic. This sound was born during our live
sessions in a cellar, in a very natural way, becoming more and more
instinctive.
And then,
thanks to My Kingdom and Disco Inferno Ent., the release of the EP has become
reality.
2. Your
sound is often described as a fusion of the Seattle scene with the British
indie scene of the 90s. How did you navigate blending these influences to
create your own unique sound?
We think
that our sound lays its bases on the personal tastes of each member of the
group. We have a very hard and dark rythmic session, a psychedelic guitar and
the meeting of these characteristics creates a noisy and expressive sound,
something very personal, something that we really feel is ours.
3. "Noirnoise"
seems to carry a dark, psychedelic vibe throughout. What inspired the lyrical
themes and musical atmosphere of this EP?
It’s
something belonging to our nature, to our way to live life. Getting older
doesn't always mean getting wiser or calmer. Emotions such as anger, the desire
for redemption or revolt have always inspired each form of art in history. For
sure, we are older than 15 years ago… but we’ve succeeded in keeping all these
emotions making them even stronger. We know that our emotions are still the
same and they are all present in our sound and in our songs.
4. Your
tracklist includes intriguing titles like "A Few Moments" and
"The Curse Of Cromwell". Could you give us a glimpse into the
inspiration behind these songs?
Our songs
have a message. They are our ways to communicate our art. It’s a noisy and
shouted message and it’s well defined. Lyrics are very important for us. They
are a part of the whole process, and without this part, the message remains
incomplete. Specifically, “A few moments” represents the importance of holding
on to the memories just because they are an essential part of us. “The curse of
Cromwell” is a celebration of freedom through a history of oppression and deprivation
of freedom itself... A very topical issue nowadays, unfortunately...
5. How
does the creative process typically unfold within the band? Do you have a
particular method for crafting your songs?
Our songs
are born by an idea… a guitar riff… some lyrics… It’s like a black canvas or a
more or less sketchy design… Each of us tries to colour his own part of this
canvas… and the result is a picture becoming more and more defined. Our songs
are the result of our staying together in a cellar and of sharing a common way
to interpreting our message. After all these years we know each other, we drive
in the same direction. It’s something you can’t plan. It’s only something you
can ride.
6. The
EP features dynamic tempo changes and heavy musical dynamics. How do you
approach balancing these elements to create a cohesive listening experience?
The
chemistry of music, as the chemistry of life, is very strange. Mixing different
substance or compounds, you can obtain something very different and, sometimes,
very beautiful. We leave free space to our creativity without chaining
ourselves. It’s a real creative process in which cohesion and balancing are
born very naturally. That's the alchemy of a band. That’s our alchemy.
7. As
fans of bands like Soundgarden, Melvins, and The Doors, how do you think their
influence manifests in your music? Are there specific aspects of their sound
that you consciously incorporate into your own?
It’s a
matter of attitude. The most important thing is the way we have to approach
music and sounds. As a form of art, music is something you can’t decide at a
table. It’s a chemical and psychedelic approach. We love the attitude of these
bands. We love their sound wall both in studio and during live performance, we
love The way these bands are related to all forms of art but, above all, we
love the way in which the band, as a whole, becomes more important than the
individual instruments. This is the chemical connection that creates that Sound
Wall.
8. With
the release of "Noirnoise", what are your hopes and expectations for
how listeners will receive your music?
We want to
live this period day by day. The release of the EP is something really
beautiful for us and we want to enjoy it. We are very convinced of the message
we bring and of what we do and we love it. So we hope the EP will be listened
by a lot of people. No expectations but a lot of enthusiasm and desire to play.
9. Live performance seems to be an essential aspect of NOIRNOISE. How do you adapt your sound and energy for the stage compared to the studio?
Noirnoise
was born as a live band. Our attitude, even in cellar, is a live attitude. We
don’t have a studio approach to our music. So, playing live is very natural for
us and it’s our favourite way to bring our message, creating a chemical
connection between the band and audience, sharing our energy and receiving an
energy back.
10. Looking
ahead, what can fans expect from NOIRNOISE in terms of future releases or live
shows? Do you have any upcoming projects or tours on the horizon?
Releasing
an album would be something important and really incredible for us, and, at the
same time, it would be so magic playing live, reaching as many people as
possible and taking our message as far as possible.
