The Total Sound Of The Undergound

Lelahel Metal

Welcome to this exclusive interview with the creative force behind 'Diastole,' the latest EP from Gli Incubi di Freud. Learn about the inspiration, diverse musical influences, and the emotional journey encapsulated in this profound musical exploration.

1. Congratulations on the release of your EP "Diastole"! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the title and the overall theme of the EP?

The ep is the musical of my life, of the first sessions with the psychologist, seasoned with some episodes of social denunciation.
2. The EP seems to cover a wide range of musical styles, from nu-metal to pop-rock and progressive rock. How did you approach the creative process to incorporate such diverse elements into your music?

I'm a very heterogeneous listener, I don't like to obsess over just one genre. I learned this at the Sziget Festival, which I attended for a decade. And I think if I wrote in just one musical language, the inspiration would eventually flatten out.
3. "Il vaso di Pandora" is described as a revenge song with an elegant look. Could you share more about the creative process behind this particular track and its significance in the context of the EP?

"Il vaso di Pandora" is the very first song I wrote. It didn't have a lyric yet and I played it to my girlfriend at the time (we're talking about 2013) After a bad separation from her, I found the inspiration to talk about separation in a very elegant way, because I didn't want to fall into vulgar accusations, which in music in my opinion are good on genres that I don't appreciate very much.
4. The EP features social denunciation in the track "Leader Carismatico." Can you elaborate on the message you wanted to convey with this song and the importance of addressing socio-political issues through your music?

I am always amazed by those who occupy relevant positions at a political and social level by gathering consensus by speaking to people's emotions on topics that should involve reason, critical thinking. Often these people only sell their image, promising a collective improvement that will never happen. The followers of these people believe that they form a strong counterculture, but in reality they are a sad uniformity of an empty thought, aimed only at elevating those who do not deserve it. That's what I wanted to shout out with "Leader Carismatico".

5. "E poi non ridi più" explores the theme of laughter in the 21st century. What motivated you to delve into this subject, and how does the song contribute to the overall narrative of the EP?

On social media, laughter has now become the first weapon to dismantle argumentation in a ridiculous way, pointing the finger at irrelevant aspects, serious and constructive argumentation. It would be nice to remember that laughter is a universal language that should unite people, and not separate them with classism.
6. "Un vero uomo" addresses the sensitive issue of emotional abuse within relationships. What inspired you to tackle this topic, and what message do you hope listeners take away from the song?

Unfortunately, it has also happened to me to be an asshole and despicable in a relationship, I know of really bad stories, where men bring out their worst. This prompted me to write about this song where little by little there is an awareness of this that these behaviors are harmful to another person above all, but also harmful to those who put them into practice, limiting the emotional growth of the subject in question. "Un vero uomo" is a short path of emotional re-education and a heartfelt mea culpa.
7. "Il cuore di Icaro" has an interesting backstory, being born as a poem and evolving into a song. Can you share more about the creative evolution of this track and its significance to you personally?

As a boy I wrote a lot of poetry and also a novel. By pure chance, a poem contained in a novel then became the lyrics of a song by an old band of mine that broke up a long time ago. Disappointed by that material that was being lost, I decided to bring that song back to life, which I found very touching, and which talks about the loss of loved ones. Playing that song always makes me feel a little melancholy when I think about those I've lost in life, especially my mother... so Il cuore di Icaro has a deep meaning for me!
8. "Il vaso di Pandora" is described as standing out from typical revenge songs. How did you approach the musical and lyrical aspects to achieve a unique perspective on this theme?

Talking about a sentimental betrayal by narrating the facts that explicitly happened, I find it rather obvious and uninteresting. So I wanted to unite two characters from Greek mythology in an imaginative reworking of their deeds, giving life to a deep, new story that is in some ways relevant to what really happened to me. This takes the narrative to a higher level, less ordinary, more curious to discover.

9. The EP concludes with "Tum," an interstellar journey. What was the inspiration behind this track, and how does it serve as a fitting conclusion to the journey started with "Sistole" in 2021?

The first track of "Sistole", our first EP, is called "Ta", and it's an onomatopoeia for the first movement of the heart. TA is very energetic and vigorous as an intro, and as a TUM it maintains a strong influence of synth music, trance rock. TA had to give the idea of impetuous and sudden birth. In between these two instrumental pieces, the two EPs, Sistole and Diastole, ideally unfold, enclosed in a single heartbeat. TUM, on the other hand, I wanted it to be more melancholic and slow, a conscious closure of the ephemeral passage on this earth, despite the fact that only a heartbeat has passed.
10. Tell us about the collaboration with Red Owl Records and the distribution through Orangle Records, INgrooves Virginmusic, and Universal Music Italia. How did these partnerships contribute to the realization of "Diastole"?

We found Red Owl Records to have already finished the mastering of DIASOLE. They liked it very much and decided to give us maximum support in its distribution, subjecting us to interviews that would help a greater distribution of this work... We regret not having met sooner, because of the way things went! They helped us a lot to set up a very effective distribution campaign!
11. Can you discuss the role of visual elements in your music, particularly the animated journey accompanying "Tum"? How do visuals complement the narrative of your music?

I think the listener is much more satisfied if he finds himself having a support, an additional stimulus that tells the same story with another perspective. The dreamlike atmosphere of Tum lent itself perfectly to being told also through a visual that was hard but compelling to achieve. Animating the drawings of my friend and illustrator Paolo83EW Petrelli was an honor and a pleasure, because his images were perfect for this difficult journey, pure of ancestral and noble emotions. Risk, dare, but without arrogance. The journey is a clear metaphor for existence and the goals that one sets oneself in order to enjoy the journey itself beyond the destination.
12. The band's name, "Gli Incubi di Freud," suggests a connection to psychotherapeutic concepts. How does the band's name reflect the themes and concepts explored in your music?

The band's first name was a terrible play on words. "Joshua has a Brain Dumm Age" which was meant to be pronounced as "Joshua has a Brain Damage". Name too and complicated to explain. After writing Freud's Nightmare, which was about my first sessions with a psychologist, I had the epiphany for a much shorter, impactful name, but which still referred to introspection on one's own emotional feelings.

13. Your bio mentions that the band's concept and themes arise from personal experiences during psychotherapeutic sessions. How has the process of translating these experiences into music been for you?

I am a very shy person, I can hardly open up and talk frankly about my emotions. This, however, does not happen in music, where I feel at ease laying bare my experience, exactly as it happens at the psychologist.
14. As a band formed in 2023, how has the journey been so far, and what can fans expect from Gli Incubi di Freud in the future?

For the future I expect an LP maybe a very ambitious concept album in terms of sounds and themes addressed, and an improvement in the exposure and realization of videos, because now in music it is essential to provide a strong imaginative universe. On the ambitious LP we will see what we will be able to do, on renewing the image we are already at work. And I want to play a lot live, of course
15. Lastly, where can fans find your music, connect with you on social media, and catch your latest updates?

It's impossible not to find us! Golden nightmares, creative awakenings to all!
